Creation ~ giving birth

Weeks ago, I talked with a friend about the creating process, about the way a creator may consider it. I saw it one way, she showed me another side to it.

To me, knitting is like bringing someone/something to the world. My knittings are my babies ;) I knit from the first to the last stitch, and when I cut the last thread, it’s like cutting the umbilical cord (seriously, I think about it everytime it happens, I’ve got lots of babies now!). And when it is totally finished, it’s like a free being, new to the world, getting older, and through the years getting worn, and finally when outworn, unraveled or thrown away (imagine how I feel when I unravel to make something new, just like resurection, haha!).

But my friend has another vision of it. She also told me about this : the start of the project (beyond knitting) can be considered as the birth, and when the project gets finished, it’s like the end of life. I’ve never thought of it that way, and I think it is really interesting. It might seem pretty dark, but not sure it is. It’s just a different process.  The first word of a book, the first stitch of a knitting is the birth, and through the writing, knitting etc life goes on, and when the last touch is made, it’s the end of life, or the end of the creation.

But when creating, people don’t feel one way or another. Creating might not mean birthing for everyone :)

So, beyond knitting, creating can be experienced in differents ways. But it is always special. You create something with your own hands, from your own imagination and technique. And you get to share it, show it, or even keep it to yourself. All this is so interesting to think about.

Creators may think the process in so many different ways. How do you feel about that? How do you create ?
